Save Free Travel

Although we hope that the worst of the Covid-19 health crisis is over, the impact is still being felt in so many ways.

We are very worried about the Government’s plans to remove free travel here in London for 11-18 year olds. This proposal which has been agreed by the Mayor of London, as part of of the Transport for London (TfL) bailout, is due to be implemented in the new year, after being postponed from October.

Any young person who lives less than two miles away from school will lose their right to free travel. For example, a student who lives in West Hampstead will have to walk or pay to get to Haverstock School in Chalk Farm, or a student who lives near Finchley Road station will have to walk or pay to get to Hampstead School.

This is outrageous.

Presenting a motion (which was voted against by Camden's Conservative Councillors) at Camden's full Council meeting, the new leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the Council, Cllr Luisa Porritt, says "Life is hard for young people today, they are facing the triple whammy of the hardest of Brexits, a pandemic and the economic fallout from it and the climate crisis. Research shows free bus travel has been cost effective and promotes independence and social inclusion for young people."

London Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon, says "This policy is based on petty politics, and quite frankly arguments that are based on ignorance... This policy is going to impact low income families the most. It's going to severely effect young people going back to school, especially colleges where young people travel a greater distance, trying to catch up on their education and training."

If you don’t agree with this Government proposal, which has been accepted by the Labour Mayor of London, please sign this petition.

WE SAY NO!

We, the undersigned, call on the government and TfL to SAVE FREE TRAVEL for under 18s
