"Last year, Camden Labour appointed an EU citizens ‘champion’ for the borough.
Our Liberal Democrat group supported the creation of the role, though we expressed concerns about the appointment process.
Eight months on, our champion has gone quiet.
Georgia Gould, Leader of Camden Council, effectively affirmed that they are no longer in post when I challenged her about the role at our recent council meeting. (Clip below)
She said that the Cabinet Member for Promoting Culture and Communities has instead assumed responsibility for EU citizens. But they already occupy a full portfolio, largely focused on the arts.
Why would Labour think it important to create a separate role to represent EU citizens eight months ago, and not now when the stakes are higher?
It’s vital that we have a dedicated representative for our 24,000 EU residents and 36,000 workers during this period of substantial upheaval.
If you agree that our EU citizens deserve better, please write to the Leader of the Council and your local councillors to demand that a new EU citizens champion is appointed ASAP through a transparent and independent process. "
