Council bows to Lib Dem pressure on EU citizens role

The Leader of Labour-run Camden Council has appointed a new EU citizens champion, following Lib Dem pressure to urgently fill the vacated position.

During January’s Full Council meeting, Belsize Lib Dem Councillor Luisa Porritt challenged the Leader about the disappearance of the borough’s EU citizens ‘champion’.

Cllr Porritt said that the key role must be filled as soon as possible through a transparent process.

After the local elections in May last year, the role was handed to a former Labour council candidate who later moved out of the borough.

The Lib Dems have consistently campaigned for the rights of EU citizens in Camden. In November, the Liberal Democrat Council Group successfully got Camden Labour to back their motion for a People’s Vote—with the option to Remain on the ballot paper.
